A storm rages over Paris as Gottfried Wolfgang, a melancholic German student, wanders the darkened streets, tormented by his own mind. Haunted by revolutionary violence and his own obsession with the supernatural, he encounters a mysterious woman—a vision of beauty and sorrow—who seeks his protection. But as dawn breaks, the chilling truth of their meeting is revealed. The Adventure of the German Student is a short story by Washington Irving, originally published in 1824.
